Brazil: Peasants Occupy Latifundium in Viamão

About 130 peasant families occupied the Rincão de São Brás latifundium in Viamão, located in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre, according to reports by A Nova Democracia (AND). The peasants entered in the latifundium in the early hours of Monday, August 25, and are demanding the division of the land as part of agrarian reform.

The peasants in the state have been struggling against the delays of Brazilian institutions regarding the distribution of land that should have been approved a long time ago, in order to settle more than 1,600 families camped in Rio Grande do Sul who are waiting for land. Indigenous Guarani Mbyá peasants had already carried out occupations in February of last year, as reported by AND:

The allocation of land has become even more urgent following the loss of tens of thousands of peasants’ homes due to the floods of 2024.

This summer, the anti-popular government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul approved the expulsion of the indigenous Guarani Mbyá peasants and the transfer of more than 145 hectares to develop a “commercial logistics center.”

Peasants in the area have remained steadfast in front of the difficulties they face and have mobilized to demand land demarcation and to denounce the failure of the so-called “agrarian reform” of the old Brazilian State, taking the land they deserve by their own force.
