Turkey: 35-year Prison Sentence Given to Partizan Prisoner Ünal Yiğit
We hereby share an unofficial translation of a note published by Yeni Demokrasi on the conviction of a Partizan prisoner, Ünal Yiğit. We already reported on his case, when his communications were recently restricted by the Adana F Type Prison’s authorities:
The 35-year prison sentence given to Partizan prisoner Ünal Yiğit in a case in which he was tried, was approved by the Supreme Court.
The verdict issued by the Istanbul 29th High Criminal Court in April 2024 was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeals. While the other defendants in the case were acquitted, Yiğit was sentenced to a total of 35 years in prison for various terms on seven separate charges, including “membership in a terrorist organization.”
Yiğit’s lawyers will appeal the decision to the Constitutional Court.
