Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation from the “International” and “Mexico” parts of the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo, both on the International Day of the Detained-Disappeared.

International. August 30 marked International Day of the Detained-Disappeared, a date on which we remember the victims of forced disappearance, mostly activists, popular or union leaders, revolutionaries, guerrillas, and communists who have been torn from the bosom of the people by reactionary states (whether liberal or fascist) that seek to silence the voices of movements that propose the revolutionary transformation of society. Forced disappearance is a crime against humanity committed by the state and its various levels of government. It has a long history worldwide as a counterinsurgency practice aimed at instilling terror and demobilizing the masses. It has been used by Italian fascism and German Nazi-fascism before and during World War II; by military dictatorships in Our America; by European colonialism in Africa and Asia; by criminal Zionism in Palestine; and particularly in our country by the tyranny from the beginning of the dirty war to the present day, leaving a terrible toll of more than 130,000 disappeared persons, more than 72,000 unidentified bodies, and tens of thousands of clandestine graves throughout the country. Responding to the call of the Current of the People Red Sun demanding 1) the presentation of comrade Dr. Ernesto Sernas García alive and 2) the dismissal of the reactionary Michel Julián López from the Local Search Commission in Oaxaca, dozens of revolutionary organizations around the world have held demonstrations at Mexican consulates and embassies, endorsing both demands. We will soon have a detailed report on these internationalist actions. Because they took them alive, we want them back alive!

Mexico. Once again, thousands of people across the country mobilized on International Day of the Detained-Disappeared, pointing to the responsibility of the old Mexican State in committing this crime against humanity that has brought the country to the brink of a major crisis with more than 130,000 disappeared persons, which the regime refuses to acknowledge, attempting to present a lower figure to the public. In response, collectives of mothers and families searching for their loved ones, as well as democratic-revolutionary popular movements across the country, have taken to the streets in multiple actions, some coordinated, but all in solidarity with each other, recognizing that we all miss the disappeared. In Mexico City, there were two important activities. The first was at the Glorieta de los Desaparecidos, where collectives of mothers and families searching for their loved ones performed a ritual for Mother Earth and demanded the return of their children alive. The second was a combative march from the Angel of Independence to the Zócalo, organized by the Cerezo Committee and the National Committee of Families of the Detained-Disappeared “Until They Are Found,” which was

attended by hundreds of comrades from the National Front for the Struggle for Socialism (FNLS) and the Organization for the Struggle for Popular Emancipation (OLEP), among others who joined in, such as the Current of the People Red Sun. In Oaxaca, there were also two activities, a peaceful march organized by collectives of mothers and families searching for their loved ones, and a united, combative march organized by the Current of the People Red Sun and supported by almost 30 organizations and unions demanding the safe return of comrade Dr. Ernesto Sernas García. Both marches arrived at the palace of ignominy (government palace) where a circus-like forum was being held by the reactionary Michel Julián, head of the Local Search Commission, whom the people of Oaxaca are demanding be immediately dismissed. In an attempt to “shield” her, the government of Salomón Jara filled the main square with stalls (which, according to him, were already “prohibited” in that location), trying to generate a confrontation between the people, but his dark plans were defeated by the united and combative march in which more than a thousand people participated, imposing a combative rally and a cacerolazo (pot-banging protest) at the gates of the palace of ignominy. We will soon have a complete report of the national activities of the #DrSernasPresentaciónConVida campaign. In Guerrero, there were also two actions in the capital. In the morning, collectives of mothers and searching families agreed to mobilize alongside students from the Raúl Isidro Burgos Rural Teachers’ College in Ayotzinapa, who belong to the Federation of Socialist Peasant Students of Mexico (FECSM), who marched to the State Congress. and in the afternoon, other groups of searching mothers held a demonstration. Similar activities have been carried out in other parts of the country demonstrating the importance of the groups of mothers and families searching for their loved ones breaking with the regime’s official and legalistic agenda, which involves simulation and delay of search and justice processes, and, on the other hand, the importance of building a national movement of mothers united with the democratic-revolutionary movement, imposing the independence of the movement before the regime and its lackeys, and proposing the perspective of popular justice.

Present them alive and punish those responsible!
