BRAZIL: Protest Against Anti-People’s Occupations Law

The reactionary governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro, and his government, have announced a law project called PLC 40/2025. This project foresees the authorization to sell State-owned real estate, as it reports A Nova Democracia. This measure is in order to increase the State’s funds and to liquidate or attack social and people’s organizations, some of which have already existed more than 30 years.

The protests are against this measure, which forms an obvious attack on the social organizations. The last protests took to the streets on 3rd of August to denounce this attack on their rights. Various organizations, including: Neighbors of the Tiradentes occupation, Federation of the Favelas of State of Rio de Janeiro (FAFERJ), “Tortura nunca mais” (torture never again) and others, gathered in front of the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro (ALERJ).

With slogans like “Attention governor, your house will be occupied!” and “Occupy, Resist! Fight to guarantee!” the protester denounced this new attack of the government, which puts in danger not only the houses where the social movements organize, but also historical occupations that poor workers in struggle have conquered, which serves as their home and shelter. Like one coordinator of the Tiradentes Occupation is denouncing: “we build our apartments, we live there with our children, the majority are women, single mothers that work, and whose children learn and live here in the center. Now they want to throw us out, from one day to another, regardless of people living in the building, and in what situation they are in. They simply want to take the building, sell it, take the money and kick us out on the streets.”

The government of Rio de Janeiro, under the Governor of Claudio Castro, is know for its brutality and anti-people policy. Every year, several police and military operations bring fear, horror and State’s violence to the poor people’s neighborhoods. It orders attacks on social movements, students and people’s movements and perpetuates massacres in the favelas.

Here are some reports and articles that give an impression of the reactionary anti-people government of Claudio Castro:
