A Nova Democracia: Bolsonaro is Sentenced for Attempting Coup D’état

We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article by A Nova Democracia.

The former president, capitão do mato, Jair Bolsonaro, has just been convicted by the 1st panel of the Supreme Federal Court (STF). The vote was 4-1, leading to the conviction of Bolsonaro and his accomplices for the attempted coup d’état. The ministers who voted for the conviction were Alexandre de Moraes, Flávio Dino, Carmem Lúcia, and Cristiano Zanin. Only Minister Luiz Fux voted for the acquittal of the defendants. The ministers still need to discuss the sentencing, that is, the length of the penalties that will be imposed on the convicted.

Bolsonaro’s conviction, along with the others accused in the coup—including his former assistant who gave the “traitorous” orders, Mauro Cid, former Abin director Alexandre Ramagem, former Justice Minister Anderson Torres, former Navy commander Almir Garnier, and Army generals Walter Braga Netto, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira, and Augusto Heleno—reflects the levels of deterioration of “political stability” reached since the promulgation of the 1988 constitution with the so-called “new” republic.

The now-convicted far-right lumpenproletariat receive merit from the media monopoly and false opportunistic left as if they were indeed the “founders” of the coup cause. In reality, they were “caught in the act” attempting to impose a more openly reactionary and terrorist regime. However, this was outside the timing of Washington. Meanwhile, the caste of veteran coup plotters in the High Command of the Armed Forces remains untouched in their roles as “silent protagonists,” as previously stated by former Army commander Eduardo Villas Boas.

As has been stated multiple times by A Nova Democracia in its editorials, the coup cause is weakened but still alive:

“However, the interventionist cause has deeper roots that cannot succumb in the face of political setbacks: the reactionary Armed Forces, who in Brazil consider themselves a “Moderating Power” – which is at the genesis of the republic “proclaimed” by the military in 1889 –, have in their formulations the positivist belief that the young Brazilian nation tends towards fragmentation, from politics to territorial power, which would threaten its unity if it were not of them, the Armed Forces, and their active role to maintain this unity. That is why they will not stop exercising military intervention, even if they are now forced to pretend to be submissive, but they are just waiting for better political conditions, which were already awaited by them in 2026. Thus, the coup plotters in boots believe that they are fundamental, when in fact it is the reactionary Armed Forces maintaining this system of exploitation that generates all the problems that have been making our people unhappy for centuries and overwhelming the Nation, even preventing its full conformation due to the feudal concentration of land, poverty and subsequent rampant crime and many other problems, as it acts as a force in the service of foreign imperialist interests, for the national subjugation and oppression and exploitation of the masses that make up the core of nationality.”
