The Brazilian Association of Lawyers of the People – Gabriel Pimenta (ABRAPO) condemned the old Brazilian State’s disregard and the resulting impediment of the education of around 150 children of the Revolutionary Area Valdiro Chagas in Rondônia.

ABRAPO states, according to reports from inhabitants of the revolutionary area, that the children “are deprived of transport to the school”. This constitutes a “serious violation of the fundamental rights, especially the right to education guaranteed in the article 205 of the Federal Constitution.” The association condemns how this is especially serious in the countryside, where “the deep social inequalities already imposed historically to the populations of the countryside” are present.

ABRAPO clearly reaffirms its “commitment to the intransigent defense of the rights of the Brazilian people, especially from those historically marginalized and affected by the negligence of the State”. ABRAPO has signed and shared a manifesto of the inhabitants of Valdiro Chagas, requesting also that others share it and sign it. The manifesto can be read and signed here:

The denouncement by ABRAPO makes clear once more the pattern followed by the old Brazilian State. It denies the right for land to the poor peasants. Moreover it criminalizes the struggle for land, both in the Court and by the media. The infamous Rondônia Military Police (MP) commander, colonel Régis Braguin has an important role in this criminalization and his ideas are spread by local reactionary media. This criminalization has also been denounced by ABRAPO alongside with the Brazilian Center of Solidarity with the Peoples (CEBRASPO):

As if this criminalization was not enough, the most fundamental rights of the inhabitants of the Revolutionary Area Valdiro Chagas are denied. A Nova Democracia (AND) recently pointed out that the repressive forces of the old Brazilian State, such as Régis Braguin himself, claim to enforce the law strictly. However, on the other hand, the laws that guarantee the rights of the Brazilian people are severely neglected, such as the right to education, or in extreme cases, even the right to life when the MP has carried out operations and attacks, murdering peasants, ignoring all judicial procedures and guarantees of rights. The most recent case was on August 8, when the MP conducted an attack, murdering the peasant Raimundo:
