On October 23, 2025, peasants from Messias, Alagoas, organized by the League of the Poor Peasants (LCP) carried out a protest marking one year since a violent eviction orchestrated by the latifundium. Dozens of peasants marched to the Messias City Hall, carrying banners and singing revolutionary songs, including the anthem “Conquistar a Terra.“
One year prior, on October 22, 2024, the peasants faced a violent eviction, led by the latifundium and supported by Judge José Afrânio dos Santos Oliveira and Mayor Marcos Silva. The police force’s violent actions left over 700 families homeless, destroying homes, crops, and livelihoods, and creating an atmosphere of terror in the area.
Upon arrival at the Messias City Hall, they met with the municipal prosecutor, who explained an agreement between the latifundium and the town: only 3 hectares of land had been promised for over 700 displaced families, equating to just 42 centimeters per family. The prosecutor tried to contact thelatifundium’s lawyer, who did not answer.
Following their demonstration at the City Hall, the peasants marched to the City Council, unfurling a banner that read, “1 year of eviction: we want our land now!” Their determination remained unshaken, with many asserting that the local government’s anti-people actions would only fuel their revolutionary spirit.
