Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the latest Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo.

New attacks are being reported in the context of the war against the people that is shaking the country. In Guerrero, comrades of the Regional Coordination of Community Authorities-Community Police-Indigenous Peoples (CRAC-PC-PF) and the Indigenous and Popular Council of Guerrero – Emiliano Zapata (CIPOG-EZ) reported that they were victims of a new armed attack by drug trafficking-paramilitary group identified as “Los Ardillos.”

The events occurred on October 31 at approximately 10 a.m. when they arrived at the community of Ayahualtempa and were greeted with gunfire. This sparked a confrontation that lasted more than 10 hours, during which the Community Police managed to detain 14 attackers and the state police detained another three.

Three community members were killed and seven others were wounded. In response, the National Indigenous Congress and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation issued a statement in support of CRAC-PC-PF and CIPOG-EZ.

In Chiapas, in response to constant attacks by the three levels of government and “private individuals” against Zapatista communities, various organizations issued a statement denouncing that… “more than a month has passed since theCollective Assembly of Zapatista Autonomous Governments (ACGAZ) alerted us to the process of legal dispossession being carried out by the three levels of bourgeois State government in the town of Belén, located in Caracol 08 Dolores Hidalgo, in the official municipality of Ocosingo in Chiapas, without any currentsolution in favor of the EZLN Support Bases, to whom these lands legitimately belong. On the contrary, the narrative of land endowment/restitution continues. With the trick of handing over to strangers documents of ownership of seized lands by the EZLN since 1994.

As we know, the war against the Zapatista towns continues, sometimes at the hands of paramilitary or criminal groups, and currently at the hands of the police and military. In Michoacán, Carlos Manzo, mayor of Uruapan, was assassinated in the midst of the celebrations on November 1; This “independent” mayor, who had previously been a federal deputy for Morena, led a local movement that opposed extortion, protection rackets, and the economic control of drug trafficking in the region. According to various reports, he had requested the intervention of the state and federal governments to combat criminal groups, but was ignored by both levels of government.

His murder has provoked immediate reactions, mainly in repudiation of Morena’s drug trafficking-governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla, whom the masses accuse of being the mastermind behind the murder. Just yesterday, a march arrived at the State Government Palace, where the masses painted graffiti and entered the building, facing repression from the state police, who managed to arrest eight people, five men and three women, who are now being investigated by the State Prosecutor’s Office.

What does not seem coincidental about this crime is that just a few days ago, various organizations of farmers held a national strike that protested at the doors of the Federal Government in Mexico City, denouncing the complicity of state governments with organized crime in the crisis shaking the Mexican countryside. After these protests, farmer leader Bernardo Bravo was murdered, followed by Carlos Manzo.

In Oaxaca, the Current of the People – Red Sun created its traditional tapestry and homage to the martyrs who fell in the struggle, now elevated to the status of heroes of the people. The event was held in the center of the City of Resistance, next to the Santo Domingo church, where a roll call was held for the comrades who have been murdered by the big landlords and their armed gangs, who enjoy the full protection of the old State.

This year, the memory of comrade Prof. Celedonio Luis Santibáñez, who was a leader and founder of the CP-Sol Rojo and who recently passed away last March, was honored. Mention was also made of the San Sebastián Coatlán massacre (March 2025) where five Zapotec comunero were murdered, including comrade Eutiquio Loaeza Jiménez; and the memory of the martyrs of the Palestinian National Resistance and the victims of the genocide in Gaza was honored. We will soon have a chronicle about this. Stop the war against the people and State terrorism!
