Spanish State: PRT Faces Defamation and Criminalization in a National Newspaper

Hereby we share an unofficial translation of an article from the Revolutionary Workers’ Party (Partido Revolucionario de los Trabajadores – PRT), which was recently attacked in El Confidencial, a national newspaper in the Spanish State, for their recent presentation on the October Revolution at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

On November 15, 2025, the newspaper El Confidencial published an article that, under the pretext of the presentation on the October Revolution we gave on November 13 at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, insinuates a connection between the PRT and terrorist actions, labeling us as a “radical and extremist party.” The article is written by a journalist whose works are built on continuous denunciation and attack on the Catalan independence movement and left-wing groups.

With this article, we want to denounce and make it clear that:

1. The article is unfounded and filled with ideological and political ravings. It describes Vito Quiles (Translator’s note: Spanish far-right journalist) and his followers as innocent “constitutionalists” censored by universities, contributing to the victimization campaign of the far-right activist, and launches anti-communist propaganda of preschool level. It attempts to establish a relationship between the PRT and a police operation, supposed terrorist actions, and detainees who have no connection to our party, revealing the journalist’s and the media outlet’s lack of professionalism and bad faith. We are aware that statements and articles like the one mentioned are, have been, and will be used in our country as a tool for the most reactionary elements of the judicial system to initiate a process of investigation and criminalization of an “anti-system” political movement, the start of a police setup.

2. The PRT will continue to defend our ideology as the ideology that will liberate the working class and humanity as a whole from all oppression and exploitation that we are subjected to. We continue to defend that the only way to free ourselves is to end a decadent, exploitative, and criminal system that causes wars of plunder and criminal actions such as the genocide of the Palestinian people. This system is responsible for waste and overproduction that lead our planet to a climate crisis that is becoming increasingly evident. It is also responsible for the exploitation (and its intensification) suffered by the working class, which leads to exhausting working hours, excessive structural unemployment, fatal work accidents, and a decreasing purchasing power. You won’t find articles from this journalist denouncing any of these issues.

And we continue to defend that the way to end this system is through a revolutionary process with the massive participation of the people, led by the working class. A revolutionary process that is capable of putting the reins of the people’s future in their hands, as the history of class struggle has shown, both in Russia and China in the last century. We will continue to talk about these revolutionary experiences, just as we did in the talk that has bothered El Confidencial so much.

3. The PRT will continue to defend all sectors of the people who fight against a rotten system like the one we live in. We will continue to defend the unionists who are being prosecuted, the persecuted artists, and the criminalized activists. We will continue to defend and fight for a genuine amnesty for those detained in the context of the Procés (Translator’s note: The Catalonian Independence Process which was severely repressed, especially the referendum on October 1, 2017), which culminated as a massive movement of struggle for democratic freedoms and against repression. We will continue to denounce police setups against all these sectors, in collaboration with reactionary journalists and media outlets.
