A Nova Democracia: Update on the Situation in Venezuela
On January 6th, Donald Trump stated through social media that the Venezuelan government has committed to delivering between 30 and 50 million barrels of high-quality oil to the US, and that the money is to be handled by the US.
“The terrorist government of Donald Trump has escalated its threats against Venezuelan sovereignty by indicating that Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello, responsible for the security forces of the South American country and also for the ‘Bolivarian militias,’ would be one of the next targets of Yankee imperialism if he “does not cooperate” with the surrender policies imposed after the kidnapping of President Nicolás Maduro, his wife, and the bombing of Caracas and other cities.” AND reports.
AND continues explaining that an anonymous source within the Trump administration stated that the US is concerned that Cabello could act as a “destabilizing element” in the face of the pro-foreign interest policies presented by the interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez. Cabello is supposed to have prior known disputes with the current interim president according to the informant.
AND goes on to report that for the US, however, direct action against the Venezuelan interior minister could culminate in even larger armed uprisings by the masses against imperialist interference, given that Cabello has great influence in the security forces, from the bases of the so-called “Colectivos” (civilians permanently mobilized and armed in defense of the government), through the “Bolivarian militias” and the Venezuelan Armed Forces.
To secure their interests, the Americans are seeking to force Cabello to capitulate through threats and potential bribes, while simultaneously looking for ways to neutralize his actions, force him into exile abroad, and crush the possibility of an armed reaction from the Venezuelan popular masses, according to the Reuters source.
Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, stated on Tuesday (January 6th) that “no external agent governs Venezuela” amidst escalating pressure from the United States (US) on the country, AND reports. The interim head of state emphasized that Venezuela “remains sovereign, governed by its own institutions,” despite the military intervention that resulted in the kidnapping of the head of state and commander-in-chief of the national Armed Forces, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife in Caracas.
