Yankee-government Threatens Ground Attacks in Mexico

In recent days, US president Donald Trump has once again openly threatened Mexico with military operations “on the ground” against drug cartels, claiming that these organizations “run Mexico.”, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports.

In an interview with the Fox News media monopoly, Trump argues that the offensive is justified by the “fentanyl crisis” in the United States, classified by his administration as a “national security threat.”. According to him, after supposedly blocking “almost all maritime trafficking,” the next step would be to “attack the cartels on land.”

In public statements, Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico maintains cooperation and coordination with US agencies on security matters, but made it clear that this collaboration does not include the presence of US troops on Mexican soil.

AND goes on to report that despite the formal rejection, the Mexican president herself acknowledged the existence of a close relationship with the US Northern Command, security agencies, and the American embassy. This ambiguity reveals that so-called “bilateral cooperation” already occurs at a deep level, even though the Mexican government seeks to preserve the appearance of sovereign control in the face of the explicit threat of US military incursions.

Analysts interviewed by international media outlets such as CNN however, believe that this rhetoric has less to do with countering “drug trafficking” and functions more as a tool for domestic electoral mobilization, especially with the approach of the midterm elections, as well as serving as an instrument of diplomatic pressure on Mexico. In this sense, the threats also aim to extract concessions from the Mexican government on issues such as extraditions, immigration control, border security, and political alignment.

AND writes that “the escalation against Mexico occurs in the same context in which the US intensifies its offensive in Latin America, as demonstrated by the recent military operation in Venezuela. In both cases, drug trafficking is used as a pretext to expand regional militarization, contain the influence of strategic rivals – mainly China and Russia – and reinforce mechanisms of political control over US semi-colonies.”
