Brazil: Call to Solidarity and Struggle in Barro Branco

Peasants in Barro Branco have denounced a new attack by the latifundium and supported by the Judiciary power. After trying to evict and disorganize the peasants without success, now the lands of the latifundium of the Usina Frei Caneca are in auction. The peasants families in Barro Branco live and work in the latifundium for more than a century and claim the land for more than 25 years.

This strategy is not new. Previous reports and complaints also point to the use of ‘straw men’, land grabbers and legal maneuvers in the benefit of big landlords, while peasants, former workers of the sugar mill and their families do not have compensation for the years of exploitation, non-payed work and the violence suffered. All of this to pay off the company’s multimillion-dollar debts at the expense of the lands of the people, A Nova Democracia reports.

Before the severeness of the situation, peasants and supporters urge the democrats and revolutionaries to strengthen the solidarity campaign in defense of the struggle of the occupiers of Barro Branco. The denouncement also points out that the auction is nothing more than a legal farce in the service of the big landlords and reaffirms that only the organized struggle of the people can guarantee the conquer of land.
