Brazil: Event in the UERJ to Honor the 30th Anniversary of the Heroic Peasant Resistance of Santa Elina
We hereby share an unofficial translation of a call for an event that will take place tomorrow in the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) for the 30th Anniversary of the Battle of Santa Elina, call published by A Nova Democracia (AND).
On Thursday, August 28, the Brazilian Center for Solidarity with the Peoples (CEBRASPO), along with the Brazilian Association of People’s Lawyers – Gabriel Pimenta (ABRAPO), will carry out a public event at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ) in memory of the 30th Anniversary of the Heroic Peasant Resistance of Santa Elina.
The event will begin at 6:30 PM in Auditorium 93, located on the 9th floor of the State University of Rio de Janeiro, at Rua São Francisco Xavier 524 – Maracanã. The newspaper A Nova Democracia, the League of Poor Peasants (LCP), the Committee for the Defense of the Victims of Santa Elina (CODEVISE), the Center for Justice and International Law (CEJIL), Torture Never Again/Rio de Janeiro (RJ), the Mothers of Manguinhos Movement, the Human Rights and Legal Aid Commission of the OAB, and the State Union of Education Professionals RJ – Regional 4 (SEPE – REG 4) are invited to the event.
Currently the agrarian contradictions are sharpening, the criminalization of organizations struggling for land, especially the LCP, is promoted while goons freely attack peasants, often along with the State. This public event emerges as a tribute to the martyrs and heroes of the Battle of Santa Elina, an event that was a turning point in the struggle for land in Brazil.
