Brazil: Colonel Braguin, “Enemy Nr. 1 of the LCP”, Dismissed From his Position
Régis Braguin, general commander of the Military Police (MP) in Rondônia, was dismissed from his position on January 14, according to local newspapers. His period was marked by an intense attack against the peasant movement, and especially against the League of the Poor Peasants (LCP), with him bragging about being the “enemy Nr .1 of the LCP”. In 2025 alone, the lethality of the MP increased by 400%.
According to the State Observatory for the Public Security, there were 35 murders by the MP in Rondônia, the State leading the ranking of violent deaths in rural areas. Under his command, different military operations against the peasant movement, especially against the LCP, were conducted. The latest was the so-called “Operation Godos”, in which peasant Elias was murdered, but last summer, peasant Raimundo Nonato was also executed during an invasion of the area Valdiro Chagas.
Braguin also admitted that the police acts with a “narrative” of struggle against terrorism – even acknowledging that there is no such term in the law – and that the goal of the “Rural Security Program”, launched in May, was never about public security, but rather the use of State armed forces to “haunt” peasants and to ensure the plunder of public land by land grabbers and big landlords, as A Nova Democracia denounces.
However, the now ex-general commander was openly uncomfortable with a poster showing the anger of the masses against him, in which he was called “peasant murderer” and an “X” is put on his eyes. Braguin described it as “witchcraft”, something unusual for someone trained in “guerrilla strategy”, who has celebrated summary executions and led operations in which, effectively, peasants were murdered.
His dismissal was also surrounded by cases of domestic violence and driving under the effects of alcohol in his official car. His friends claim that the domestic violence was due to the “heat of the emotion” during discussions.
