Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an excerpt on Mexico from the latest Weekly Newsletter from Sol Rojo.
The war against the people in our country takes on many dimensions and forms, depending on the agenda and specific interests of the actors behind each conflict. In Chiapas, human rights activist Poulette Celene Hernández was attacked by unknown individuals on February 8 at her home in the municipality of Tonalá. The incident was reported by various democratic organizations across the country in an urgent alert. Comrade Poulette is a lawyer who provides her professional services to women and indigenous peoples in the state of Chiapas, amid the increasing violence from the regime and armed groups, which has intensified with the work on the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec (CIIT).
In Mexico City, activist Leobardo Hernández Bernal was detained by the police on February 14. Leobardo is a member of the Otomí community residing in Mexico City and part of the movement defending their right to the city and dignified housing, among other issues. After a series of mobilizations, Leobardo was released the same day. In Oaxaca, activists and organizations have denounced that the state government maintains a distant attitude towards the peoples in the midst of multiple complaints where, in matters of justice and reparations, it refuses to comply with or accept the recommendations issued by the Human Rights Ombudsman of the People of Oaxaca (DDHPO). In this regard, Current of the People Red Sun denounces that recommended cases such as 05/2018 (arbitrary detention and torture against activists), 01/2023 (forced disappearance of Dr. Ernesto Sernas García), and 14/2025 (forced displacement of indigenous Triquis from San Miguel Copala) are not being addressed by the Oaxacan government, which has prioritized unnecessary matters such as the circus of the recall referendum that evidenced popular weariness with the electoral farce and its bourgeois institutions.
Nationally, various sectors of the popular movement are driving reactive reorganization processes (praising spontaneity), but it is still urgent to point out: we do not need the “unity at any cost” promoted by opportunism and revisionism as superficial and formal unity. We need principled unity and unity in action, as the highest and most objective form of unity. Only in this way can we build the United Front – capable of halting the war against the people, and the Anti-Imperialist Front – capable of uniting progressive, patriotic, and anti-imperialist forces under the banners of self-determination and national liberation of our people. Stop the war against the people and state terrorism!
