The war against the people continues unabated.
In Oaxaca, violence has once again erupted in the Isthmus region, led by the local chieftain of Santo Domingo Petapa against the communities of San Juan Mazatlán Mixe. In February 2025, three community members from El Platanillo (one of them a local coordinator for UCIZONI) were killed in an ambush by an armed group that set up a siege around the community, preventing food, water, and even bodies from being brought in for burial. At the time, the Oaxaca state government downplayed the events as “an agrarian conflict,” ignoring the phenomenon of local chieftainship and the criminal groups that operate in collusion in the region for control of territory and natural resources. Now, since February 18, a group of around 50 Mixe families from the community of Loma Santa Cruz have been displaced, while in Los Valles and Rancho Juárez there are threats of eviction by the criminal group. More recently, on February 27, community member Israel Cabrera Andrés, an indigenous Mixe from Loma Santa Cruz, was found dead. Dozens of organizations have issued a joint statement.
In Sonora, members of the Mexican Navy entered the autonomous community of Lomas de Bácum, firing weapons at the civilian population and its Traditional Guard. The Navy entered in violation of the community’s indigenous autonomy, allegedly in pursuit of two criminals who were not members of the community, and after firing several shots, state police and municipal police from Cajeme arrived to support the attacking military personnel. The community issued a statement denouncing the events: “We strongly denounce the firing of weapons against the population as well as the interference with and violation of the laws of the people of Loma de Bácum. We know that the Yaqui territory is the object of capitalist ambition and bad government, which is why we remain alert and hold the three levels of government responsible for these events and for possible attacks that, through their armed forces, they may carry out against our comrades. In Yaqui territory, it has been demonstrated that the people rule and the government must obey, and from our different territories we will remain alert.”
Stop the war against the people and State terrorism!
