Germany – Dem Volke Dienen: A Wave of Bankruptcy

Some economic data forecasts a minimal recovery of the economy of German financial capital. But still: For thousands this recovery comes too late!

The Federal Statistical Office has announced that there have been 16% more bankruptcies in June compared to the same month last year, in the first half of the year there have been more bankruptcies than in any of the past 13 years.

In June of 2026, the German courts have registered 2266 corporate insolvencies. Counting the 30 days of the month, this corresponds to one bankruptcy every 20 minutes, almost a sixth more than in the same month the year prior.

From January to June, 12,812 corporate insolvencies were registered, which corresponds to 6.7 percent more than in that time in the previous year. According to the Federal Statistical Office the previous time a higher number was registered happened in the first half of 2013, with 13,253 cases.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, the traffic and logistics sectors are the most affected, with 72 insolvencies for every 10,000 companies, followed by hospitality industry, with 60 bankruptcies for every 10,000 companies, and the construction industry, with 53.

The real figures are probably even higher. The Statistical Office has noted, that only regular closures of companies are counted, not those that are currently entering problems of payment.
