LCP denounces persecution to Camp Mãe Bernadete

The League of Poor Peasants of Northern Minas and Southern Bahia has published a note denouncing the political persecution of Camp Mãe Bernadet. In a new attempt to expel the peasants, the company Calsete tries to discredit them using an environmentalist speech, meanwhile, the company got a total of 11 millions of reais in environmental fines!

As A Nova Democracia explains, since 2023, the dispute between squatters and the mining company Calsete over the lands of the hacienda Lagoa do Portácios has intensified. However, it was in the early 2000s that deforestation in the region by the Calsete mining company was discovered, therefore the large amount of fines.

The environmental persecutions against squatters in the area take place in the framework of the ‘Invasão Zero’ Movement is articulating nationally against the League of Poor Peasants and that peasants have increased production after the self-demarcation of land for the people.

“The fields are beautiful, clean and will represent abundance for our communities. Very different from a bunch of parasites who live off the sweat and blood of our people, exploiting and oppressing”, stated the LCP.

At the end of the leaflet, the LCP guarantees: “Camp Mãe Bernadete continues to resist and is an example of struggle for all peasants in the region, who live surrounded and threatened by latifundium. Just like the struggle at Camp Trevo/Porto Agrário in Minas where the big landlord was king and many did not believe that the peasants would win. How wrong they were!”
