Brazil: Kaingang Indigenous Retake Lands
A Nova Democracia (AND) has reported that a group of Kaingang indigenous peasants have retajen land in the northern part of Rio Grande do Sul. The group has been living on the property since July 21, and following the initial occupation by about 20 individuals, 150 families have established themselves in the area.
The Military Brigade, along with the Shock Battalion, has been deployed to the area, surrounded it and intimidated the indigenous peasants.
AND reports that for over a century, the indigenous people have been claiming ownership of this land, and there have been roadblocks and mobilizations by these indigenous farmers for years. The newspaper AND has reported in the past about land retaken in this area by indigenous peoples, among them, the Kaingang people.
