Demonstration in the Favela Complexo da Penha Against the Genocide

A joint demonstration was organized against the genocide against the poor and black people in the Complexo da Penha, one of the favelas where the biggest police massacre in the history of Rio de Janeiro, murdering 136 people, took place.

Residents of the Complex do Alemão and Penha, and relatives of the murdered were in the demonstration. Also the youth from the favelas, as well as democratic students, participated.

The relatives of the murdered denounced the policies of the ongoing genocide and the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, responsible for the two biggest police massacres in the history of Rio de Janeiro.

“All the corpses that we took from the forest area had signs of torture” states a resident to A Nova Democracia. They also denounced the destruction of homes, shops and cars, and attacks to elderly people and women.

The Military Police was deployed during the demonstration, and they were reported laughing when the relatives of the victims made the speeches, as was denounced in the accounts made to A Nova Democracia. However, this did not intimidate the demonstrators, who showed their rejection to the massacre.

“Stop the massacres, murderous police! No more hypocrisy, the police kills poor people daily! It did not stop, it must stop! I want the end of the Military Police!” Chanted the demonstrators.
