In the department of San Pedro, in eastern Paraguay, thousands of peasants have mobilized against the old State, which is serving the interest of latifundium, A Nova Democracia (AND) reports. There was a battle on the Lusipar latifundium, where more than 800 police officers were mobilized to confront the peasants. The latter have not been deterred: they are calling for a national mobilization to take the land and for the release of political prisoners.

Fifty vehicles and thousands of peasants took action and occupied the land of a latifundium owned by a well-known drug trafficker protected by the old State.

Two police officers were wounded by shots. The police responded with harsh repression, arresting 29 peasants.

AND explains that San Pedro reflects the country’s land problem: 77% of Paraguayan land is concentrated in latifundiums of more than 1,000 hectares. Big landlords and foreign capital own 90% of the country’s territory, and it is estimated that 300,000 poor peasants live without access to land. People’s leaders have been imprisoned under false accusations, and peasants are organizing to repair vehicles destroyed by the police and liberate the political prisoners.

On December 20, a general assembly was held to define the next steps in this struggle and new peasant offensive.

AND reports that before the increasing peasant offensive, the old State increases the militarization of the countryside and allows the entrance of military personnel of Yankee imperialism:
