Ireland: Republicans from Across 32 Counties Gather to the Socialist Republican National Hunger Strike Commemoration

On Saturday, September 19, Republicans from across the 32 counties and abroad, gathered in Dublin for the Socialist Republican National Hunger Strike Commemoration, organized by Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland.
Assembling at Phibsboro, the procession—led by the RSRM Color Party and joined by representatives from Independent Dublin Republicans, who displayed their banner in remembrance of the Hunger Strikers—marched to Glasnevin Cemetery. At the grave of Thomas Ashe, those gathered paused to hold a silent tribute to George McAnespie – a founding member of the IRSP, INLA and Anti-Imperialist Action – who recently passed away.
The ceremony marked 45 years since the 1981 Hunger Strikes and honored the men of the H-Blocks and the women imprisoned in Armagh. Contributions included readings, performances, and speeches from veteran Socialist Republican Sean Doyle and former POW Mike Edwards, who highlighted the continuing relevance of the Hunger Strikes, stressing that republican history must not be confined to annual remembrance but should inform the political struggles of the present. The commemoration ended with the flags being lowered and the singing of “Amhrán na bhFiann”.
