Brazil – Obituary for Comrade Helena and Antonio: Present in the Struggle!

We hereby share an unofficial translation of an obituary published by A Nova Democracia (AND) for a comrade and her partner, who was important for the struggle for land in Brazil. The obituary has been written by the Support Committee of AND in southern Pará.

On August 10, Comrade Helena Vieira Ferreira de Araújo and her partner, Antônio Alves de Araújo, tragically passed away in a car accident. Helena was present in the struggle for land in Southern Pará for the past two decades, participating alongside the League of the Poor Peasants in important battles of the Agrarian Revolution, such as the occupation of the Forkilha latifundium, which was the scene of one of the largest land struggles in the state in recent years.

The comrades were pioneers in the city of Redenção and captivated everyone who knew them with their struggling spirit. Their wake was marked by several tributes from family and friends, and the League of Poor Peasants was also present.

On August 20, family and friends protested at the city council for the punishment of the person responsible for the car accident, who was driving under the influence and collided with the comrades’ vehicle, achieving a motion of condemnation for the negligence of the delegate investigating the accident.

Before her death, comrade Helena was leading a group of families that were mobilizing for the struggle for land in the region.

We honor the memory of the comrades and proclaim:

Helena and Antonio: present in the struggle!
