Nueva Peru: Declaration by SUTE Lima

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a declaration by the SUTE Lima, shared by the Association of New Democracy – Germany (Nueva Peru) on October 27.

STATEMENT FROM SUTE LIMA METROPOLITAN AREA

OCTOBER 30: TEACHERS’ STRIKE IN LIMA METROPOLITAN AREA!

The United Union of Education Workers of Lima metropolitan area – SUTE Lima – expresses its firm decision to call for and resolutely participate in the teachers’ strike on October 30, in defense of our labor, pension, and wage rights.

Our struggle is just and legitimate. Peruvian teachers cannot continue to be ignored by a government that seeks to impose punitive evaluations, condemns our laid-off and retired teachers to inadequate pensions, and maintains salaries that do not reflect the effort and responsibility of those of us who sustain public education.

Therefore, we demand:

1. The defense of public schools against any form of privatization and the commodification of education.

2. An end to punitive evaluations**, which do not contribute to improving education and are used as mechanisms for the persecution, punishment, and dismissal of teachers.

3. The immediate implementation of Law No. 32581, the Decent Pension Law, guaranteeing a decent and fair retirement for laid-off and retired teachers.

4. Opposition to all anti-labor regulations designed to persecute teachers, such as Law 32242, the Law on the Automatic Dismissal of Teachers.

5. A real and decent pay raise for all teachers, in line with the cost of living, inflation, and the social responsibility of our profession.

6. Permanent appointments and job security for contract teachers, as well as better working conditions for all education personnel.

In the face of indifference and threats from the government and the Ministry of Education, Lima’s teachers are responding with unity, organization, and struggle. No right has ever been granted voluntarily: all have been won through worker mobilization.

Therefore, SUTE Metropolitan Lima calls on all teachers, teaching assistants, laid-off workers, retirees, parents, and education workers to actively participate in this day of struggle by suspending their work and disciplined adherence to the strike on October 30.

This strike must be a forceful demonstration of our strength and determination. In every educational institution, in every sector, and in every organizational space, let us speak with one voice:

AGAINST THE PRIVATIZATION OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS!

NO TO PUNITIVE EVALUATIONS!

FOR THE REGULATION OF LAW NO. 32581! FOR DECENT PENSIONS FOR LAID-OFF AND RETIRED TEACHERS!

AGAINST ANTI-LABOR REGULATIONS THAT HARASS AND PERSECUTE TEACHERS! REPEAL THE LAW ALLOWING AUTOMATIC DISMISSAL OF EDUCATION WORKERS!

FOR SALARY INCREASES IN LINE WITH THE RISE IN THE COST OF LIVING! ENOUGH WITH BONUSES THAT LINE THE POCKETS OF THE CEN SUTEP!

FOR PERMANENT APPOINTMENTS AND JOB SECURITY!

LONG LIVE THE UNITY AND STRUGGLE OF THE TEACHING PROFESSION!

LONG LIVE SUTE LIMA METROPOLITAN AREA!
