Brazil: After the latifundium attacked, the army was send to Indigenous Lands

The latifundium offensive that began a few weeks after the great mobilization of indigenous peoples against the genocidal project of the “marco temporal” reached the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, Mato Grosso do Sul and Rio Grande do Sul. In these regions, indigenous peoples were targets of gunmen who invaded communities, set fire to houses and shot at the community as a form of provocation.

It was lately reported, that in Nothern Rio Grande do Sul, gunmen appear once a month to terrorize the indigenous people. In the last attack, which occurred on July 20, gunmen invaded the community, shooting and setting fire to a shack.

Previously, another attack had already occurred on the July 14, when the gunmen set fire to a car in the community. In Eldorado do Sul, in the Metropolitan Zone of Porto Alegre, gunmen shot at the roadside camp of the Pekuruty community, the attack took place during the early hours of July 13th.

The old State’s “solution” was to authorize the sending of the armed forces to “areas of conflict” in the four states, in addition to extending the presence of the “National Force” in Rio Grande do Sul, which has been present since May.

In Rio Grande do Sul the agents were responsible for repression and gratuitous violence against the masses. Aware of the latifundium’s coordination with politicians, the role of the troops sent by the federal government is to turn a blind eye to the attacks, being unable to prevent the offensive of the gunmen who terrorize indigenous communities.
