Mexico: Press release of the Current of the People – Red Sun
We hereby publish an unofficial translation of a press release by Red Sun:
Statement regarding the attempted raid on our press offices
To the working class and the toilers
To the poor peasantry and the oppressed indigenous peoples
To the women and youth of the people
To the organizations, collectives and unions in struggle
Comrades,
On November 28 this year, unidentified individuals attacked our press and propaganda offices in Oaxaca City. This is the third time that these offices have suffered a similar attack.
1) On March 4, 2020, the office registered blatant surveillance and harassment by individuals dressed in civilian clothes, with police or military bearing, who took photographs of our facilities and the personnel who work there. More than three motorcycles, a van and a vehicle were used to try to intimidate those who provide their services there.
2) On February 4, 2023, around 2:50am, an unknown individual wearing tactical clothing stole an external security camera from our offices and after that, a series of threats and persecutions against activists and leaders of our organization were recorded. Just a few days earlier, on January 29 of that same year, an armed commando had attacked the agrarian community of Rincón Tagolaba, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.
3) Now, on November 28, our offices have been attacked again, with the theft of the exterior security cameras and the destruction of the lock and padlock on the entrance gate. Military-style shoe prints have been seen at the site.
The systematic attacks against our press offices are fully documented and each one of them has been reported to the Attorney General of the State of Oaxaca (FGEO) and notified to the National Mechanism for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, without the State having resolved this situation to date despite the fact that we have provided evidence of the various events that have occurred. The so-called “competent authorities”, after pretending to pay attention to our complaints, have time and again decided to “close” them without making any progress in any of the investigations related to the attacks recorded against our organization, but when there has been an attempt to investigate or criminalize our comrades, as in the case of Salvador Pinal Meléndez or Arnulfo García Santos, the old State has been implacable, fabricating crimes and imprisoning them.
We are not naive, we are perfectly clear that attacks against the press and propaganda apparatus of democratic-revolutionary organizations like ours are a state aggression.
Who is interested in silencing the voice and denunciation that we make through our independent media?
Who would invest financial resources, vehicles and personnel to repeatedly attack a press office?
As we stated on November 28, we are on GENERAL ALERT for any new threat against our assets and our comrades. We have once again filed the corresponding complaint and we demand that the FGEO, the Government Secretariat, the Mechanism and the Ministry of the Interior expedite the investigations, find the perpetrators and bring them to the jurisdictional authority so that they answer for these crimes committed against those of us who defend rights and those who exercise freedom of the press.
On the other hand, we are grateful for the various expressions of solidarity coming from various democratic organizations and blocks of the civil space, the popular movement and the union movement from Oaxaca and various parts of the country have raised their energetic condemnation against this aggression, offering us their fraternal support. To all of you we say:
Thank you, comrades! Solidarity is the tenderness of the people.
Finally, to our adversaries, our detractors and the old State we say: They will not silence us! We will continue to raise the red flag of the New Democratic Revolution, agrarian and anti-imperialist, which the country demands in order to be free.
In the face of repression, mobilization!
In defense of freedom of association and freedom of the press, not one step back!
Defend the rights of the people!
Whoever governs, the rights of the people must be defended!
Let the workers rule the country!
