Brazilian teachers and students protest the attacks on their rights

A Nova Democracia (AND) has reported on a teachers mobilization in Pará, where on December 18 many public workers, teachers and other protesters demonstrated against the Law Project 729/2024 proposed by the state governor, Helder Barbalho. Among other things, this project attacks the workers’ rights as well bring budget cuts in the education.

AND reports that the demonstrators were “violently repressed by the Military Police, who shot rubber bullets and tear gas bombs”. There were teachers who needed to go to the hospital. The protesters responded to the aggression by erecting barricades formed by burning tires.
On December 23 there was a teachers demonstration in Seropédica, Rio de Janeiro. The workers have not received several payments and they have protested and defended their rights.
The students have also mobilized at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). On December 12 the students of Geography, Geology and Tourism erected a tent camp in front of the Institute of Geo-sciences of the UFMG. They protested the lack of infrastructures and means of transport to carry out their researches and academic activities. Assemblies and discussions were done on December 17 and they decided how to continue the struggle during the upcoming weeks.
