Mexico: Weekly Newsletter
We hereby publish an unofficial translation of the latest weekly newsletter by Sol Rojo:
The war against the people continues to claim the lives of the poorest, while the parasitic classes at the top enjoy the fruits of power. In Santa Ana Amatlán, a ranch in Michoacán, a seasonal worker died after contact with an anti-personnel landmine, which are used by armed groups (such as drug traffickers and paramilitaries) in various states of the republic.
Nearby, in the state of Colima, Oscar Fernando “N” was captured, allegedly involved in the disappearance of activists Ricardo Arturo Lagunes Gasca (lawyer) and Antonio Díaz Valencia (teacher), both leaders of the indigenous resistance process of the community of Aquila, Michoacán, missing since January 15, 2023; other detainees in the case are José “N” and Fernando “N”.
On the other hand, in the community of Santa María del Monte, State of Mexico, last week messages circulated through WhatsApp calling on people to “stay home” in a kind of curfew due to the increase in crimes such as kidnappings, extortion and others. After that, a strong operation of corporations such as State police and the national guard arrived at the place, who have practically besieged the town, allowing the municipal and State authorities to “deny” the curfew.
Meanwhile, in the community of Acuaco located in the Sierra Nororiental of Puebla, teacher José Luis Lucas Quirino was murdered, who was also a defender of land and water in his community. The events occurred when the teacher arrived at the Juan Francisco Lucas Rural Primary School of which he was director, accompanied by his daughter who is a student at that school, when an armed commando opened fire on his vehicle, taking his life.
Finally, on February 4th, the media outlet Where are the disappeared? (“A dónde van los desaparecidos”) published a report regarding the forced disappearance of Claudia Uruchurtu, Irma Galindo, and Sandra Estefana Domínguez Martínez, three human rights activists in Oaxaca who disappeared under conditions that clearly lead their families to claim that it was the State… “It is important not to dissociate the disappearance of Domínguez from those of Galindo and Uruchurtu, since all three cases show how “evil” the State can be, by disappearing them and denying their families access to justice.”
Stop the war against the people and State terrorism!
