Mexico: Organizations express solidarity with UCIZONI

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a statement published by Periódico Mural in solidarity with the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Area of the Isthmus (UCIZONI) and condemning the murder of three of its activists.

Periodico Mural joins the demand for justice for the UCIZONI’s murdered comrades in El Platanillo, Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca and demands an end to the harassment against the community. We share with our readers the denunciation that various organizations make in solidarity after the events that occurred on February 13.

The signing organizations condemn and denounce the ambush that occurred in the bordering area between Santo Domingo Petapa and San Juan Mazatlán, Oaxaca, in which three comrades from the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus (UCIZONI) were murdered and where the community of El Platanillo continues to be under serious threat.

WE DEMAND immediate response from the Mexican State and the application of urgent measures. We do not accept plays or delays. We hold the State and federal governments responsible for this escalation of violence that does not only persist in the region, but throughout the country. We condemn these crimes and the impunity with which they are executed, leaving victims in total abandonment.

The strategies of extermination and dispossession against indigenous peoples are today the face of the self-proclaimed Fourth Transformation, which in Oaxaca and in many other regions of the country has made agreements with economic and military interests at the expense of the lives of our communities.

The mega-projects of death, such as the Inter-oceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, the so-called Mayan Train and the Morelos Integral Project, advance with the militarization, repression, murder and disappearance of those who resist. We will not allow the blood of our peoples to continue to be the cost of corruption and the incapacity of those who govern. In Oaxaca, the power vacuum and the indifference of the authorities have turned the State into a territory of impunity.

WE DEMAND IMMEDIATELY:

1. That President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, assume her responsibility and act immediately in the face of these crimes. Violence against indigenous peoples is a direct consequence of her government’s policy.

2. To the General Attorney’s Office and the General Attorney’s Office of the State of Oaxaca, to investigate, arrest and punish those materially and intellectually responsible for these murders. Enough of impunity and of agreeing justice with those who dispossess and murder.

3. The State of Oaxaca Government and the Ministry of the Interior, to act immediately and issue urgent protection measures to stop the aggressions against the community of El Platanillo and other communities at risk.

4. The Protection Mechanism for Human Rights Defenders and Journalists, to implement real and effective actions to guarantee the safety of community defenders in the region. No more bureaucratic measures that come too late.

Enough of speeches of a proclaimed peace, while comrades of the social movement are murdered. Impunity is the direct responsibility of the Mexican State and the Oaxaca Government.

We stand in solidarity with UCIZONI and with all the indigenous communities who, despite repression and the war against life, dignity and territory, continue to struggle for a just and free future.

Enough of murders against those who defend the earth and life!
