Paris, France: Homage for Pierre Overney on February 22 of 2025

We hereby share an unofficial translation of a call published by La Cause du Peuple for Pierre Overney, Maoist French worker murdered on 1972.

As every year, our newspaper calls on its readers, all those who sympathize with La Cause du Peuple and revolutionary militants, to participate in the Homage to our Comrade Pierre Overney, on the occasion of the 53rd anniversary of his death.

Pierre Overney was a Maoist revolutionary worker, a member of the Gauche Prolétarienne (Proletarian Left – GP), who participated in the sale of our newspaper. On February 25, 1972, Gauche Prolétarienne called for a commemoration of the anti-fascist and anti-colonial demonstration in the Charonne metro station, which repression caused the death of eight unionists and communists in 1962. To mobilize, GP decided to enter in the Renault Billancourt factory to massively spread leaflets with the Renault Struggle Committee. One of the security guards, Jean-Antoine Tramoni, shot and killed Pierre in front of the factory, to prevent him from leafleting.

Pierre’s death profoundly upset the workers’ and revolutionary movement. His funeral brought together 400,000 people on March 4, 1972, in a procession of more than 7 km. Hundreds of thousands of workers, students and political activists paid tribute to him, including his comrades from the Gauche Prolétarienne and, at the head of the procession, the Arab Workers’ Movement (MTA). Our comrade Pierre Overney was avenged on March 23, 1977, when a commando of the Noyaux armés pour l’autonomie populaire – NAPAP (Armed Nuclei for People’s Autonomy) executed Tramoni.

The commemoration will begin at 10am on February 22, 2025. The meeting point is set at exit 1 of the Père Lachaise metro station in Paris. We hope to see many of you!

We share here a series of photos of the procession during Pierre’s funeral:
