Hundreds protest in Rio de Janeiro against Trump’s threats to Gaza and the Palestinians

We publish an unofficial translation of an article of A Nova Democracia:

On Thursday February 13 hundreds of people gathered in downtown Rio in a protest in defense of the liberation of the Palestinian people and against the plans of the ultra-reactionary US president, Donald Trump, to promote the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people to build luxury resorts. The rally took place in front of the city hall and soon headed to the United States consulate.

At the beginning a minority of protesters did not want to go to the consulate, fearing the anti-riot police deployed. However, the vast majority continued the march towards the consulate, chanting slogans against Yankee imperialism and against the State of Israel.

Once at the spot, the protesters continued the mobilization. Despite the disproportionate number of security force agents, there was no repression. More than 100 police officers were mobilized, including the Shock Battalion, RECOM, Military Police and Municipal Guard, in addition to the vans and a water jet truck, ready to be used.

Despite the intimidation, the demonstrators stood firm in defense of the liberation of the Palestinian people, chanting slogans and lighting flares, in support of the victorious Palestinian resistance.

In early February, US President Donald Trump, at a press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stated that they would build a ‘Middle East Riviera’ in the Gaza Strip.

While thousands of Palestinians are murdered or expelled from their homes by the State of Israel, Donald Trump says that it is a good alternative to build a recreational area in Gaza, because, according to him, Palestinians would have access to “great quality housing, as a beautiful city, as a place where they can live and not die”.

Donald Trump is used to profiting from the homelessness of others. Before becoming president, he was a real estate speculator. Leading the Trump Organization, a company founded by his father, he built and managed hotels, casinos, skyscrapers and golf courses, mainly in New York.

In 2012, the tycoon exposed his plans to build one of his “Trump Towers” in Rio de Janeiro, taking advantage of the “new port area” project, built to meet the requirements of FIFA and the Olympic Committee. The project was firmly criticized and responded with constant protests by residents of the central region, who at the time were suffering from violent police evictions.

With the deepening of the demonstrations at the time, leading to the massive demonstrations of 2013 and 2014, which had the massive participation of the population of the Center, the North American tycoon gave up on the project.
