Goons kill young man in coordinated attack on indigenous peasants in Bahia
One young man was killed and another seriously injured during the coordinated attack on two Indigenous Lands in Bahia on March 11. The attack was coordinated, occurring a day before the discussion of the Federal Public Minister’s Office (MPF) to decide on the demarcation of the Indigenous Land in southern Bahia. Hundreds of peasants had gone to the federal capital demanding demarcation. During the attack, material damage was caused to the houses of the indigenous peasants. The leaders say that this attack is part of a “series of violations and attacks on their people” and said they won’t “abandon the struggle.”
First actions by the National Campaign in Defense of the Agrarian Revolution
On March 8, International Women’s Day, the National Campaign in Defense of the Agrarian Revolution began. CEFP, MEPR together with Dawn of the People carried out the first joint activities. Among the actions was the agitation of the Agrarian Revolution, where the example of the Menino Jonatas camp in Jaqueira (Pernambuco) was given. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, leaflets about the struggle of women in the countryside and the city and against the 6×1 scale were spread.
Peasants block road against privatization
Peasant protests from several indigenous peoples protested on February 16 against the privatization of the BR-364 highway to favor the latifundium in the transport of goods on the so-called “Agro Norte Route”. In their statements, the peasants assure that they will be the most affected because they will face “more deforestation, more invasions and more environmental degradation” and will be charged for the use of the road.
