NPA-West Camarines Sur kills 11 AFP soldiers in active defenses last February

The New People’s Army (NPA)-West Camarines Sur (Norben Gruta Command) twice repelled attacks from the 81st IB [Editor’s note: Infantry Battalion] and 16th IB in the last week of February in the town of Ragay. The Red army’s active defenses killed at least 11 soldiers and wounded seven.

On February 23, the Red fighters bravely fought in the encounter that took place in Barangay Baya, Ragay, Camarines Sur. Consequently, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) immediately launched a battalion-strength operation in the forests of Ragay and Lupi of Camarines Sur and Labo of Camarines Norte.

On February 24, the Red fighters again encountered a military formation in Ragay. The unit fought and safely maneuvered away from the enemy columns.

In desperation to inflict heavy damage on the people’s army, the military flew two helicopters and indiscriminately strafed the mountains of Barangay Baya, affecting the livelihood of residents near the area.

Red fighter Angelo “Ka Kim” San Diego fell in the successive battles. “The Norben Gruta Command and the entire revolutionary movement gives highest honor [to Ka Kim] who bravely faced the highest sacrifice of serving the people,” NPA-West Camarines Sur spokesperson Ka Michael Robredo said.

Meanwhile, the Red army clarified its policy on using command detonated explosives (CDEx). Contrary to the Marcos regime armed forces’ accusation, the use of CDEx is covered by international humanitarian law and complies with the Ottawa Treaty framework.

Command detonated explosives only explode when pressed or detonated by the element assigned to it. The effect of such explosives is precise and limited. Red fighters who perform the duty of detonating CDEx undergo intensive training.

On the other hand, Ka Michael condemned the military butchers for their multiple violations of international humanitarian law. Residents in the villages covered by the operation were reportedly prevented from trekking up the mountain to make a living. Many of them were subjected to intimidation, psychological warfare and mental torture.
