Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby share an unofficial translation of the part on Mexico from the Weekly Newsletter published by Sol Rojo on the 25th of May.

On May 25, Section XXII of the CNTE launched an indefinite strike as part of its preparations for the National Strike set to begin on June 1. The democratic teachers’ movement of Section XXII has kicked off this day of action with great force in the cities of Oaxaca and Mexico City, respectively, where sit-ins will be held. While in Oaxaca the day has generally passed without major incidents, in Mexico City the opportunistic administrations of Clara Brugada and Claudia Sheinbaum have deployed a massive police operation to prevent the Oaxacan teachers from reaching the Zócalo, resulting in the first skirmishes between education workers and the uniformed pigs.

As we know, on June 1, the National Coordination of Education Workers (CNTE) plans to launch a national strike to press for its most pressing demands, calling on workers across the country to prepare for the general strike. Starting on that date, the FECSM and various democratic organizations will also join the teachers’ sit-in, bringing to the table other demands regarding education, justice, land, and territory; the Mothers and Families of the Disappeared, whose demand for truth and justice has been ignored by Claudia Sheinbaum’s technocratic government, will also be joining this effort.

We are in the days leading up to the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and the call for a BOYCOTT is growing and gaining strength among the national teachers’ union and the various sectors engaged in the struggle. Sheinbaum’s repression will not stop the movement’s powerful advance as it unites around this critical national moment.
