The Special Court for National Intelligence Agency (NIA) cases has sentenced 10 people to death. These 10 people—who have already been imprisoned for 13 years – are accused (solely on the basis of suspicion!) of participating in an operation by the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army, led by the Communist Party of India (Maoist), in 2013.
During that operation in the Jaram Valley, the PLGA executed 27 despised leaders with a long history of suppressing popular uprisings, ordering attacks on indigenous peoples, and implementing exploitative policies at the expense of the Indian people. That operation took place just four years after the launch of “Operation Green Hunt,” which the Indian State had launched to eliminate the armed Maoist revolutionary movement. An operation marked by atrocities and murders committed by the army and paramilitary forces, always with the green light from the Indian State.
Although the defendants maintain their innocence (and some of them do not even identify as Maoists), and even though the prosecutors themselves state that the 10 did not organize the attack, the Indian State appears determined to proceed with their execution, After all, the Indian State, using military and paramilitary forces, has for years been murdering Indian activists—even outside the courts.
They’re even afraid of the “intellectual Naxalites”!
Shortly after the so-called “cockroach movement” and the mass take-to-the-streets by India’s youth – the massive protests that caused upheaval and led to the resignation of the Minister of Education – Modi made the following provocative statement: “India has largely rid itself of the armed Naxalites, but the ideological Naxalites still pose a threat.” And yet! The countless bombings, the murders of CPI (Maoist) leaders – and even of civilians and children – are not enough to eradicate from the consciousness of the youth, poor peasants, and indigenous peoples: the struggle for liberation and social progress, as well as the struggle against the big landlords and the imperialists.
In India—a country they want to portray as one of prosperity and rapid economic growth—over 60% of the population lives below the official poverty line. And while economic and social destitution is intensifying, Modi claims that “the Maoists are destroying India’s future”!!! At this juncture, with the Indian people enraged following their mass protests, the Indian State will proceed with the murder of the 10 in the Jaram Valley.
Every democratic and progressive person must stand with the 10! They must show solidarity with the Indian people and with the Indian communist revolutionary movement, which has been a source of inspiration for peoples across the globe for decades.
