Mexico – Mural Newspaper: Does MORENA Defend the National Sovereignty?
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article of issue No. 31 of the Mural Newspaper, published on their website on October 8.
The Senate recently approved, in both general and specific terms, the bill that prohibits citizens with dual nationality from running for executive branch offices, such as the Presidency of the Republic and the governorship in the country’s 32 states. This will amend Articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Federal Constitution, imposing a well-deserved restriction on despicable figures such as Ricardo Salinas Pliego, who, in addition to acknowledging his dual Mexican-US citizenship, has expressed interest in running for the presidency in 2030.
From a political standpoint, thinking about the national sovereignty, the measure is correct, when looking at cases like Noboa in Ecuador and De La Espriella in Colombia, both of them with US citizenship and who were backed since their candidatures by Washington. It is a well-known fact that Donald Trump was behind the victories of these and other like-minded figures in Our America, operating an entire network of actors, collusion, corruption, and influence in the region, a network that extends all the way to Mexico.
However, the 4T [translator’s note: the current government, as well as the one before of AMLO has proclaimed itself to be the Fourth Transformation of Mexico “4T” in reference to the struggles for national sovereignty in history] measure is not enough to stop foreign interference in the country’s affairs, much less to prevent candidates or traitorous leaders from winning positions in various elected offices. The issue goes beyond formalities and is definitively rooted in the matter of principles and political integrity, which are directly related to the class background and class consciousness of political actors. What does this mean? It means that no political figure stands above the classes, and that their ideas, political consciousness, and actions are shaped according to the place they occupy in society.
“It is not consciousness of men that determines their being, but, on the contrary, their social being that determines their consciousness.” (Marx)
Who are they, how were they shaped, and what is the track record of the politicians of the 4T? The latest news tells us of governors, senators, representatives, mayors, and all manner of political hacks tainted by corruption, organized crime, and a glaring disconnect from the common people.
The hypocrisy of the self-proclaimed “fourth transformation” is such that while it boasts of being a “leftist movement,” “born of the people,” and champions slogans like “for the good of all, the poor first,” its ranks include prominent businesspeople, the new rich, enthusiasts of “narco-culture,” perpetrators of violence against women, instigators of violence, and so on. Organizationally, the overwhelming majority of its representatives are professional politicians who have enriched themselves through a public life in which they have moved from one position to another, with no greater merit than collecting their “allowance” or laying “foundation stones.” Many more are political opportunists who jump from one party to another when the ship has sunk; it is not uncommon to find in the “cherry-red” party’s election propaganda several former members of the PRI and the PAN who are now more Catholic than the Pope.
Can a party like this really guarantee national sovereignty, non-interference, and freedom from foreign intervention? The answer is NO. Just as bourgeois elections are no guarantee of anything, much less national sovereignty.
When insurgent General Vicente Guerrero said, “The Fatherland Comes First,” it was not merely a campaign slogan, but a battle cry for national liberation against colonialism and the foreign powers that already viewed Mexico as a territory to be conquered.
