Finland – Punalippu: Finnish Imperialists on a Leash Held by Yankee Imperialism
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by Punalippu on October 9.
A request for information submitted by Maaseudun Tulevaisuus on September 29 reveals in 2027, the United States is planning repair, modification, or renovation construction projects on bases of the Finnish Defense Forces. The Finnish Ministry of Defense responded to the request for information. Yankee imperialism has been given a mandate to carry out its construction projects on Finnish soil under the framework of the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA).
In the DCA, Finnish imperialists have granted Yankee imperialism authority over 15 different military areas on Finnish State territory. These areas include, among others: the Rovaniemi, Kuopio-Rissala, Tampere-Pirkkala, and Jyväskylä-Tikkakoski air bases; the Upinniemi naval base; and the garrison areas in Kirkkonummi and Vekaranjärvi. Finnish imperialists are doubly committed to Yankee imperialism; the DCA agreement is a bilateral military agreement between Finnish imperialists and Yankee imperialism, and NATO membership binds the Finnish State more broadly to the bloc of Western imperialists.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the United States is one of Finland’s key allies, and an integral part of this alliance is the DCA agreement, which “clarifies the rules of cooperation and enables deeper cooperation in all security situations.” The DCA agreement, for example, allows for the entry of Yankee imperialist troops and the storage of defense materiel – in other words weapons – and also grants Yankee imperialism criminal jurisdiction and taxation privileges in Finland. As the world’s sole hegemonic superpower, Yankee imperialism seeks to use agreements such as this to consolidate its presence in the territories of smaller imperialist powers. Similar agreements exist in the Nordic countries, for example, in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. As a result of the DCA agreement and NATO membership, Finland’s ruling class and its Parliament appear increasingly two-faced, as the opposition expresses a vote of no confidence in the government over its “erratic” Middle East policy, while simultaneously maintaining close military cooperation with the United States, the butcher of the peoples of the Middle East.
Finnish imperialism has long-standing ties with Yankee imperialism in the procurement of weapons, and the upcoming renovations to military facilities are part of this ongoing relationship. For example, the F-35 fighter jet procurements, which have attracted a great deal of attention in the news, are evidence of Finnish imperialism’s agreements with Yankee imperialism at the expense of the people. According to 2021 data, the purchase price of the fighters manufactured by the defense contractor Lockheed Martin is 8.38 billion EUR for Finland, covering 64 fighters. According to the government’s “austerity list” published in 2026, cuts to social and health care services and pensions would save eight billion euros— which is exactly the right amount to cover the fighter jet purchases (the life-cycle costs of the fighter jets will also run into the tens of billions).
Finnish imperialism wants Yankee imperialism as an ally in the coming conflict among imperialist powers, in which the world will once again be repartitioned. It is clear that in such a conflict, where contradictions among the imperialists take on an armed form, imperialism promises nothing but suffering for the masses. The historical task of the proletariat in the face of this future is to oppose the militarization of the imperialists and to build up its own forces to rise up in revolt against the imperialists. With their war-mongering policies, the imperialists will ultimately destroy themselves and the entire imperialist system. Either the proletarian revolution will prevent a world war between the imperialists, or the war will ultimately give birth to a revolution.
