Mexico – Mural Newspaper: El Niño Phenomenon

We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by Mural Newspaper on October 15.

The El Niño climate phenomenon will reach destructive intensity by February 2027, an environmental collapse that the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) predicts will be extraordinary by the end of 2026. This scenario is not an isolated natural event, but rather the direct consequence of the global capitalist model driven by large corporations that have prioritized their own interests and are taking unrestrained actions that directly affect the planet, altering rainfall and temperature patterns on a global scale. The historical accumulation of greenhouse gases by transnational corporations has led to exceptional warming in the tropical Pacific; the WMO estimates a near 100% certainty that this crisis will spread, multiplying the risks of severe droughts, catastrophic floods, and extreme heat waves that will hit oppressed nations hardest.

The impact of this environmental crisis will affect different sectors of society asymmetrically, and will be most acutely felt in rural areas, as large transnational agribusiness corporations and food monopolies leave local economies defenseless against massive crop losses, drastically affecting the food security of poor peasants and Indigenous peoples.

Governments and the WMO are staging a preventive mobilization to “activate early warnings.” However, these mitigation plans aim to save lives in the face of the disaster’s symptoms, but they neither challenge nor halt corporate extraction nor the devastation that lies at the root of the problem. The UN warns that humanity is in “uncharted waters” because capitalism continues to heat up the planet and externalize environmental costs, while vulnerable communities pay the price in human and material losses.
