Austria: Deepening Crisis Within SPÖ Further Weakens Governing Coalition

In a recent article published by Die Rote Fahne Austria, the deepening crisis in the Party leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) is laid out. After recent polling, SPÖ polled at 15%, marking a still ongoing downwards trend. In 2006, the SPÖ was polling at 35%, and have since then been on a steady decline, with 21% of the votes from the 2024 elections in Austria. In a futile attempt at reversing this trend, the SPÖ has ousted its chairman Andreas Babler, who will lead jointly with the duo of Holzleitner and Kucher until the next Party conference.

Die Rote Fahne writes that the inability of the SPÖ to keep a leader for more than two years without massive problems arising, is a further sign of the party’s weakness, with the leadership struggle and the temporary three person leadership further restricting the party’s room for maneuver within the government, and will force them to submit even more to the two other coalition partners (the People’s Party (ÖVP) and the Liberals (NEOS)). Die Rote Fahne emphasizes that this is a decision marking weakness and not strength.

Die Rote Fahne highlights the fact that the SPÖ has shown that despite its guise of “social” rhetoric, it is at the forefront of implementing the harshest austerity and cost-cutting program in a long time, cracking any illusion of the SPÖ being a “workers’ party,” and not a servant of monopoly capital.
