Brazil – AND: AIL Plenary Session in Rio de Janeiro Brings Together Students and Workers

We hereby share on unofficial translation of an article published by A Nova Democracia (AND) on October 18.

The Brazilian section of the International Anti-Imperialist League (AIL) in Rio de Janeiro will hold a rally on October 21 at Saens Peña Square in Tijuca to denounce the growing imperialist intervention in Latin America, particularly in Brazil. The call to action was one of the decisions made at the plenary session held by the AIL, the Revolutionary Popular Student Movement (MEPR), and the Arapuka Movement, on October 13, at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

The plenary session filled a university auditorium with students and workers. During the session, participants discussed the international and national political situation and the need to loudly propagate, through activities organized by the plenary and in the demonstrations already taking place across the country, the cause of a combative and independent struggle against imperialist interference and against attacks on the people’s rights.

The rally on the 21st is centered around the slogans “Yankees out of Latin America” and “Against the far right: take to the streets!” The full call to action can be read below:

DEMONSTRATION AGAINST YANKEE INTERVENTION AND AGAINST THE EXTREME RIGHT

There is a gradual intensification of Yankee intervention in Latin America in the form of military presence, “security” agreements, sanctions, electoral pressure, and competition over strategic resources.

Brazil is next in line: billions have been funneled into Flávio Bolsonaro’s election campaign, along with covert pressure tactics such as the closure of embassies on the eve of the second round of the election. It has its internal lackeys, such as Bolsonaro himself, but also ministers and high-ranking military officers who will open the floodgates to the US.

Only popular mobilization can stop these criminal interests in our mineral wealth, and the imposition of measures to extort our income in the form of cuts to rights, tax hikes, rising prices for basic goods, and the crippling public debt that is heading toward military intervention if barriers are not put in place to stop them.

Saluting the student protests and those from broad sectors of society who recognize the danger we face, we call on all organizations and individuals who want to fight against Yankee domination to join us!

OCTOBER 21 AT 5 P.M. AT SAENS PEÑA SQUARE!

YANKEES OUT OF LATIN AMERICA!

Join us in this call to action; send us a message, and we’ll include your signature or that of your organization.
