It’s been a month since thousands of protesters took to the streets of Lima against the government. The protests continue, leaving images of struggle and combativeness on the streets of the capital. So far, one person has been murdered by a gunshot to the stomach and 120 protesters have been injured due to police violence.
The demonstrators continue the struggle after having succeeded in ousting Dina Boluarte as President. The protesters are now demanding that the new president, José Jerí, resign. However, the new President has declared a State of Emergency.
The government has just announced that it will declare a State of Emergency, hoping that increased repression will put an end to the protests. Along with this measure, a package of actions has been announced to “reinforce citizen security” and to confront “the advance of crime in the capital”, seeking to criminalize and discredit the people’s marches. With the approval of these measures, arbitrary detentions and home raids without a judicial order would be allowed, and rights such as freedom of assembly and movement would be suspended.
