Actions Demanding the Freedom of the People’s Lawyer Lenir Correia

Several actions took place in Brazil against the persecution of the popular lawyer Lenir Correia, who was arrested for doing her job as lawyer. She was persecuted after the so-called “Operation Godos”, a police operation against the League of the Poor Peasants in Rondônia.

In Brasilia, Distrito Federal, activists from the Base Collective – Honestino Guimarães (CBHG) and students from ExBEPe rallied in front of the Federal Council of the Order of Lawyers of Brasil demanding the immediate release of the lawyer. Lenir Correia suffers from severe health issues putting her at risk and no measure has been taken to protect her. The demonstrators also denounced the increasing repressive violence against the peasant movement in Rondônia.

They stated: “What happened to the lawyer Lenir Correia is a severe crime and a direct attack against the popular lawyers. Imprisoning the lawyer of the peasants amid of the persecution and criminalization of the struggle for land in our country, where the institutions of the old State attempt to change the public opinion against the peasants, calling them criminals and ‘terrorists’”.

In São Luís do Maranhão students distributed leaflets to express their support for the LCP and demanding the freedom of the people’s lawyer.
