AND – US Troops Land in Paraguay: Yankees Increase Military Presence in South America

US Armed Forces troops landed in Paraguay on Saturday, January 10, amid growing US imperialist intervention in South America, A Nova Democracia reports. According to a US military spokesperson, the landing was carried out under a “bilateral” agreement signed in December, which authorizes the presence and activities of US military personnel in the country. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that this agreement “opens new doors for our collective efforts to advance security and stability in our hemisphere.”.

According to official sources, the joint training operation with the Paraguayan Armed Forces will last for approximately six months and aims to enhance “crisis response and contingency planning”. The training includes around 40 Paraguayan military personnel and 12 US military personnel, specialized in international operations.

The US military presence in Paraguay is part of a broader context of increasing militarization of the South American continent promoted by US imperialism. US has expanded its military presence in countries considered strategically important, with military exercises in Colombia and Guyana, and the deployment of troops to the Manta military base in Ecuador. Currently, US warships remain in the Caribbean Sea, continuing the severe imperialist aggression against Venezuela following the kidnapping of its president on January 3.

The “New” National Security Strategy of of the United States, released in December, confirms the trend of US imperialism to increase its intervention in Latin American countries with the goal “to restore American preeminence in the Western Hemisphere” and containing the influence of China and other imperialist rivals in the region.

In this context, the US military presence in Paraguay and other countries in the region is a threat to the sovereignty of Latin American countries. The increasing intervention of US imperialism in the region has generated concern and rejection from the masses of the people of Latin America.
