“The Popular Court recognizes Lenir Correia Coelho as political prisoner of the Brazilian State”. This was stated in the resolution “C” of the Popular Court Against the Crimes of the Latifundium in Rondônia, held on March 28 and 29. The lawyer Dr. Lenir Correia is imprisoned since November 12 for defending the rights of the peasants in the Area Tiago Campin dos Santos after a police operation.

As the Brazilian Association of People’s Lawyers (ABRAPO) denounces, “her imprisonment represents a violation of the right to defend the peasants, criminalizing the popular advocacy as an expression of the state of exception suffered by the poor peasants in Rondônia”.

The Popular Court was held to denounce the crimes of the latifundium before the impunity in the Brazilian countryside, especially in the State of Rondônia. Barely two weeks after the event, the old Brazilian State decided to initiate investigations of murdered peasant leaders between 2009 and 2016, showing the importance of this event.
