After the attacks on the housing encampments this past week, thousands took to the street, rallying against Portugal’s deepening housing crisis despite attacks by the repressive forces. Encampments were also put up in various cities throughout the country for the demands in the struggle for housing, such as rent caps, more public housing and restrictions on property purchases by investment funds.
You can read our previous report on the struggles in Portugal here:
Police attacked the demonstrators who had put up tents in the Rossio Square in Lisbon as well as in Porto, and clashes broke out between the demonstrators and the police. The police arrested 31 people, and injured 11.
In the previous days, several marches in the struggle for housing had been carried out throughout the country. One such took place in Lisbon on October 24, where around 25,000 participated in a march from Marquês de Pombal to Rossio Square. Popular marches and mobilizations also took place in Porto, Aveiro, Braga, and Coimbra.
