An article published by A Nova Democracia (AND) on November 3, exposes the intentionally misleading nature of the official unemployment statistics. While these statistics show a supposed rate of 5.2% the analysis by AND shows that in reality looking at the population over 14, 5.6 million are unemployed, 66.5 million are outside the labor force, and 38.8 million are informally employed. Together they account for 63.1% of the 175.7 million people aged 14 or older in the country.

At the same time they denounce that in many jobs, especially in informal ones, there is insufficient employment, that is the people can not live off of the work-hours they receive because they are not allowed to work full-time. As such the statistic exposes that 46.8% of people earn less than 2,000 Raes monthly, that is around 360 US-Dollar,. 31.5% do not even reach 1,621 Raes (around 290 USD)
