Mexico: Weekly Newsletter

We hereby publish an unofficial translation of the Mexico part of the weekly newsletter by Solrojista:

There is a call for the Continental Meeting to “build an alliance in defense of the territories of indigenous peoples against gas pipelines and other mega-projects”, an initiative that is being built mainly among the indigenous-oppressed peoples of North America and Mesoamerica. Newspaper Periódico Mural had already reported on that in a recent interview with the comrade Carlos Beas from UCIZONI who said… “we are beginning to organize a Trinational Meeting in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec on that topic. For us, an important place due to the industrialization of the Isthmus in this moment […] the isolated struggles have no future […] in the end one of the strategies that the State has is to split us, divide us […] there is a dimension, which is not the dimension of institutional policy, it is the dimension of the social struggle that has been made invisible but that is taking place and there are very strong, very intense struggles with important groups.” A call was issued for October 10, 11 and 12, 2024, at the Yajxonax Center, Tierra Bonita, in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca, Mexico. A large participation is expected from diverse peoples and movements in resistance from Canada, the USA and Mexico, as well as other countries in Mesoamerica. In this regard, it is important to highlight that the struggle that the people and communities have been pushing in resistance, together with its democratic organizations, continues to demand a high price. Like Current of the People Red Sun we highlight the murders of our comrades Luis Armando Fuentes Aquino (04/19/2019), Jesús Manuel García Martínez (10/27/2022) and Félix Vicente Cruz (04/13/2023); the attempted of murder our regional leading comrade Eric Sánchez Gutiérrez, and the arbitrary arrest of our comrade Salvador Pinal Meléndez (09/20/2021). These are a part of the costs due to the struggle for land and national liberation. That is why their faces, their names and their example come along with the struggles of our democratic organization, marking the route that we must travel without deviating from it and without capitulating under any circumstances. Our organization welcomes the initiative of the comrade of the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Northern Zone of the Isthmus (UCIZONI) and others democratic organizations which are calling for the meeting. We support the slogan The Inter-oceanic Corridor plunders and kills poor peasants and indigenous peoples! In the face of the imperialist mega-projects of dispossession and death … combat and resist!
