Brazil: Residents of People’s Condominium Confront Police After Violent Incursion
We publish an unofficial translation of an article of A Nova Democracia.
On the night of September 3rd, police invaded the popular neighborhood Princesa Isabel, in Porto Alegre, during a persecution of armed men who escaped in a car to the condominium. The residents of the neighborhood, which is usually invaded by the repressive police forces, resisted the incursion.
The residents blocked the access gate to the condominium, forcing the police to continue by walk. Two of the persecuted men were cornered by the police, one of them supposedly targeted the brigadianos (translator’s note: military brigade) with a gun and he was machine-gunned, dying in the hospital, the other one was arrested.
After the shootout, the police tried to intimidate the residents demanding that the people who were filming must “come inside”, but the repressive forces were answered with sticks and rocks threw by the residents, forcing the police to retreat from the condominium. After the action, the repressive forces cried to the main press to denounce the “damages to the vehicles and to a member of our unit” that the rocks of the masses caused.
The Condominium lives a terror routine
Princesa Isabel condominium is where the police forces kidnapped, tortured and murder the worker Vladimir Abreu in May. The residents told AND support committee that the incursions are routine and they came together with torture, aggressions and false accusations.
After the death of Vladimir, the residents set fire to two buses in front of the condominium. The expel of the police forces from the condominium is a great victory of the people’s masses who resist the genocidal policy of criminalization of the poverty.
