AND: Trump is elected in the USA; political crisis tends to worsen
We hereby share an unofficial translation of an article published by A Nova Democracia (AND) on the US elections.
The ultra-reactionary former president of the United States (USA), Donald Trump, was reelected today (6/11) to the presidency of the country, according to an official confirmation that arrived in Brazil around 7:30 am local time. Trump’s administration tends not to resolve the fundamental issues that affect the American people and to worsen the ongoing political crisis, an expression of the general crisis of imperialism itself.
The tendency for Trump to win was already observed before the opening of the voting sessions, but it strengthened in the early hours of today, when the ultra-reactionary surpassed Kamala Harris’ votes in the swing states (where voters oscillate between choosing “Democrats” or Republicans) of Pennsylvania, Georgia and North Carolina. It was the victory in Wisconsin that sealed the victory of the ultra-reactionary.
The vote count is still ongoing. At the time of writing (8:50 am Brasília time), Trump has 71 million votes, while Harris has 66 million. The number of abstentions, which was a major concern for reactionaries this year, is yet to be calculated; however, it is expected to remain high, after years of increases. The American newspaper The Worker reported how certain sectors, such as pro-Palestine activists, have opted to boycott this year’s electoral farce.
Reactionary threats
In his first speech, Trump repeated the classic chauvinist slogan of “Make America Great Again.” The ultra-reactionary also referred to the need to “fight the enemy within” and the “communist threat”, referring to the reactionaries of the “Democratic” party, but, in essence, also as a clear threat to the country’s truly progressive sectors, such as American revolutionaries, pro-Palestine masses, and radicalized youth who identify with the anti-fascist struggle under the term “Antifa”. In recent years, Trump has launched several threats against “Antifa”.
The threats already signal the direction of the reactionary trend that will mark Trump’s administration, made official at a critical moment in American politics. The electoral race itself was marked by episodes that had not occurred since the Cold War, such as the hoax of the assassination attempt on Donald Trump, a product and driver of the ongoing political crisis, and used by the ultra-reactionary to capitalize on his own campaign.
Problems will continue with Trump
Meanwhile, the driving problems of the economic crisis in the US, linked to the general crisis of imperialism itself, will not be resolved by the leader of the American far-right.
In the economy, the tycoon has no concrete plan to resolve the economic problems affecting the US, such as inflation above the target, high interest rates, astronomical public debt and an economic pace that points to a crisis of overproduction. In the last Trump administration, the problems already existed and worsened, and they continued under Biden.
The only option for imperialism to try to circumvent the effects of the crisis, which Trump will resort to, is the even greater plundering of the peoples and nations oppressed by the US, which also involves the dispute over colonies and semi-colonies with other imperialist countries. The problem for the Yankees is that this worsens already critical phenomena, such as the migration crisis, the rebellion of immigrants in the US and the masses in oppressed countries, and the political and military tension with other imperialist powers (China and European powers) and the superpower (Russia).
A particular topic will be the Middle East, where the Arab Resistance is launching harsh blows against the colonial and apartheid regime maintained by the Zionist State of Israel with Yankee support. During the campaign, Trump asked Netanyahu to achieve a ceasefire before his inauguration in January, in an attempt to reverse Israel’s political isolation, even if this involves sporadic operations in the Gaza Strip. There is no certainty that this will happen, since it involves political disputes with certain sectors of Israeli domestic politics, especially religious Zionism, currently led by Itamar Ben-Gvir (Minister of Homeland Security) and Bezalel Smotrich (Finance).
In this dispute, the tendency of US politics towards ever greater centralization in the Executive Branch remains in force, even if mediated by the control of the terrorist organization The Pentagon. With this tendency, the democratic rights and freedoms of the American people will certainly not be spared either, as they are obstacles to Trump achieving his goals.
