Teachers defend their rights in different parts of Brazil

We publish some notes on the workers’ struggles throughout Brazil published by A Nova Democracia (AND).

Teachers’ strike against the PLC 186 in Rio de Janeiro

In Rio de Janeiro, the local teachers decided in an assembly to approve the strike against the Bill “Complementar” 186/24, popularly called “Evil Package”. This increases teaching hours, which forces them to exceed 40 hours per week. Supplements are also eliminated and the government is trying to urgently approve the PL2584/2023 to protract the current kind of contracts of the teachers – which are temporary – and thus to delay the appointment of public jobplaces, what promotes the precariousness and instability of teachers.

The strike was approved on November 4 in an assembly, where there were 491 in favor and 355 against, and during the assembly combative slogans were shouted as “there is no solution!” And in addition to that strike, another one of the education workers for November 12 was approved unanimously, along with an action in front of the Municipal Chamber of Rio de Janeiro.

Eduardo Paes, mayor of Rio de Janeiro, increases the attacks against education workers since just after being appointed again as mayor of Rio de Janeiro in the most recent Electoral Farce in which, as AND points out, boycott won with 38.8%, while he achieved a 37.1% of the votes.

During the Workers Assembly, there was an information table of the Anti-Imperialist League (AIL), and leaflets and information were shared to the workers that were there. On the table there were magazines and newspapers of AND, among others. The Palestinian issue was also discussed, which was welcomed by the workers who promised to read the leaflet and learn more about the AIL.

Teachers of high schools protested in defense of their rights in front of the state school João Carneiro Dos Santos, in the municipality of Senator Canedo. The protests began on October 31, and since then they have not stopped struggling for the defense of their rights.

The PL 946/24, approved on October 22 in the state of Goias, is a setback in the labor rights of education workers. Some teachers who have spoken with AND, say that PL 946 increases the minimum working day, attacks the right of non-attending the workplace because of health issues or because of having a relative sick. It also devalues the training of professionals, in addition to withdrawing some teachers’ supplements.
